Joy Healey BA(OU) - Qualifications and background

Degree
My degree included many 'systems' modules, which left me with an interest in systems failures and how to prevent them, or recover from them. For over twenty years in the computer industry I worked as a trainer and systems analyst, well used to problem solving.

Nutritionist
After a career break to have children I qualified as a nutritionist on a three-year course at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in Putney. I quickly realised that although clients typically left a consultation enthused by their new-found knowledge, very few of them actually followed through on what they had learned. Other therapists agreed - apparently, left to themselves, only 14-20% of people change their behaviour in response to information gained. The College of Nutrition Education and Lifestyle Management (CNELM) recognises this and their degree programme teaches coaching techniques to help clients get the most from their consultation.

Coaching
My first coaching course, with CNELM was the INLPTA Coaching Diploma. NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) has been described by one of its co-founders as “an attitude of mind leaving behind it a trail of techniques”. INLPTA (International NLP Trainers Association) is an international association of aligned NLP Trainers and Master Trainers who have agreed to abide by and uphold INLPTA's standards of quality, professionalism and ethics in their NLP accreditation training.

I was so impressed with the results coaching had in my own life that I decided to look at broader areas of coaching than nutrition. To expand my training I took a further, longer course, at 'The Coaching Academy', accredited by The Surrey Region Open College Network. The Coaching Academy sponsored the development of National Occupational Standards in coaching - the first initiative to set coaching standards in the UK. The Observer recently named The Coaching Academy as 'The number one training programme in Britain and the UK's biggest coach school'. I am proud to have passed this course with Distinction.

Life
And of course, I have applied the techniques learned in my own life, with excellent results!

Professional Association
I am a member of the Complementary Therapists Association in Embody - (formerly Guild of Professional Practitioners). To remain on their Public Register each member must obtain Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points, by learning new skills and developing their professional knowledge and ability.

Testimonials

G.E. "I am very happy that I made the decision to be coached by Joy. She is empathetic, resourceful and creates an environment where it is possible to find clarity."

C.S. "Thank you so much for all your help during these sessions. At the beginning of the sessions I felt that I "couldn't see the wood for the trees" with my busy life. I now feel that I am a more organised person with some realistic goals and a clearer understanding of my priorities."

T.N. "Thank you for your time and life-coaching expertise. You asked me simple questions, I gave the answers and, hey presto, there's the solution in neat, bit-sized chunks - all my own making! It has been very helpful and a good grounding for my approach to future challenges."

T.P. "When I met Joy, my work life was disorganised and cluttered, my relationship with my boyfriend was faltering, my health was sub-optimal and my karate teaching and training had reached a plateau. With her gentle but firm guidance through the issues involved, she helped me formulate a logical plan to improve these areas one by one. There were times when I didn't action my agreed goals, normally due to work stresses, but in my mind I had a longer-term vision and gradually things began to change for the better.

Just before our final session I was able to pass my 4th Dan black belt examination in karate. I was much fitter and felt more confident after doing my exam and my relationship was improving too. Over Christmas I was able to clear much of the clutter that has been making my work difficult, so I am much more in control of my daily life. And the wonderful culmination of our time working together has to be the fact that my boyfriend proposed marriage, which came as a complete, but delightful shock!

Looking at the whole coaching process, I think it has forced me to take time to sit down and consider everything that needed sorting from my perspective. Joy helped me to see what actually needed to change and then supported and encouraged me to succeed. I'm convinced that marriage was not on the cards in my boyfriend's mind before I met Joy, but I can't thank her enough for helping me to make my dream a reality."

The originals of these letters are available for inspection at my Harrow office by prior appointment.

Motivation to do this work

I started initially studying nutrition. I had suffered from migraine, exacerbated from working in the IT industry. I qualified in 2000 – and have been practising since. I found people would come along wanting to feel better but then procrastinated with the recommendations. At that point I become interested in coaching and the motivational aspects of helping people. I had felt I wasn’t getting to the Root Cause with what I was doing, so I took a coaching course. This looked at the work-life balance & stress – and I had really good results applying to my old life. I was particularly interested in the holistic approach used in coaching – it was important for me to address other areas in the lives of individuals that could impact on health issues.

Hobbies and Interests

I enjoy reading (anything!) and I love line dancing (it’s great exercise!).
