Tarot...

Tarot is a divination system that uses a set of cards to gain insight and achieve greater control over issues involving relationships, opportunities, and life changes.

The Tarot deck is over 500 years old. With archetypal roots that go back almost 2000 years, Tarot has become a repository of ancient wisdom. Interestingly, our modern playing cards are a subset of the Tarot.

The history of Tarot symbolism is shrouded in mystery. Some of the Tarot symbols are thought to have originated in China, India or Egypt. Tarot cards date back to 15th century Spain, Italy and France.

How does Tarot work?

A tarot deck consists of 78 cards that you lay out in any one of a number of spreads. Each card is symbolic of an energy or spiritual truth, its relevance depending upon its position in the spread. There are so many possible outcomes that tarot readers spend decades mastering the meanings of all the cards in all the different combinations. Books are one resource, but can only help so much.

Using the power of Synchronicity, Tarot taps both the subconscious and the superconscious Mind, the center of our psychic abilities. Anyone can become a good tarot reader. But a gifted reader of Tarot is far more than someone exercising innate psychic abilities. An appreciation of the power of the archetypes contained in the images on the cards demands a classical understanding. By bringing you this element, Tarot.com lets you give yourself good readings right off the bat and will lead to more accurate intuitive abilities over time.

What kinds of questions is Tarot well suited for?

Tarot is excellent for receiving clarity on problems or issues that logic by itself simply can't handle (most of the important ones in life!). Relationships, negotiations, work dynamics, office politics, family matters, spiritual well-being.

Can Tarot tell the future?

A large enough Tarot spread can give you a very keen sense of the probabilities inherent in a situation, but the specific way that things turn out are, in the final analysis, up to you -- how well you adapt to the ever-changing conditions that your Tarot reading reflects. A Tarot reading gives a snapshot of what is going on in the Present, the time you are picking the cards. It can help you see aspects of a situation that have been invisible to your ego. In contrast to popular opinion, Tarot is a valuable form of meditation on the Present moment that returns insight and advice. Although it does reflect probabilities, it is NOT a form of fortune-telling.

Tell me more about the Tarot cards

At their most fundamental level, the Tarot is simply a set of symbols which are printed on a pack of 78 cards. Not good, not evil, just a deck of cards. These cards are shuffled and dealt just as ordinary playing cards are; in fact, a modern deck of playing cards is a smaller, slightly modified version of the Tarot deck. The Tarot has four suits with ten numbered cards and four court cards in each suit. (A modern playing card deck combines the Knight and Page into the Jack, leaving the King and Queen alone). In most Tarot decks there are also twenty-two numbered Major Arcana, alternatively known as Keys, Triumphs or Trumps. (Some authors will add or remove Keys but this is not a common sight.)

While the Major Arcana are the more powerful of the two groups, since they deal with major life changes and philosophies, the Minor Arcana are often the most common in readings because they refer to the mundane events most questioners ask about. (Mundane does not mean "boring" - it means "of the world", as in "of everyday existence".) Each of the four suits deals with a different general theme:

* Wands (or Rods or Staves) refer to creativity and energy,
* Cups (or Vessels) relate to the emotions and friends,
* Swords encompass the realm of challenge and thought,
* Pentacles (or Disks or Coins) speak of money and security.

The cards are not full of magical power or touched by the curse of Satan, as skeptics and debunkers would lead you to believe - they are cards! All of the divinatory power of the Tarot lies with the Inner Voice and, by association, with the reader. This concept extends to all divinatory methods like Runes, I Ching, and the more obscure methods such as crystal balls and tea leaves. The Tarot is a tool that allows the Inner Voice to state messages in a visible form. While you cannot often hear the advice it gives you on its own, with the Tarot as its language, the message can be understood and you can receive guidance on new areas to reflect on to help you in your life.
